About Me:
Outside of work, I love to get outside and go on adventures – either by cycling around Europe or climbing mountains. At work, I’m a (naturally introverted) engineer who likes to use and present data to make informed engineering/business decisions.

Hello! My name’s Alastair but most people call me Ally (only my mum sticks with my full name especially when I’ve annoyed her).
I live in Battersea, London, with one of my best friends from work (which has made working from home during the current COVID-19 pandemic a bit more interesting!). During our breaks we battle each other at FIFA and go for cycles around nearby parks in SW London.
In 2018 I took a 9-month sabbatical from work to backpack around South America, where I quickly learnt how bad I am at Spanish. Was an amazing life experience that I would encourage all young students/professionals to do early in their careers.
I have a 7-month old niece, Penelope, who lives in Manchester and I last saw at Christmas. So am enjoying watch her grow up through photos and videos regularly sent by my sister. Cannot wait to be able to see her again and witness her cause chaos when she starts to learn how to crawl.

I work at a global energy company (BP) as a project manager for an engineering team. Our team’s mission is to write and manage the company’s technical standards for how we buy and operate engineering equipment on our projects across the world.
Aside from my day job, I’ve also been fortunate to be involved in a company-wide initiative to become a purpose-driven company. Our new purpose, “to reimagine energy for people and our planet”, sets a direction for our company strategy and help produce cleaner energy to combat climate change.

My Typical Day:
I usually start the day with a bit of morning yoga to stretch my body and clear my mind – ready for the day ahead! I then cycle to the office (or work from my living room) and manage engineering teams to deliver technical specifications and lead ‘Innovation’ sessions to inspire the team to generate new ideas to improve how we work more efficiently.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the money to help fund my friend’s new initiative to connect STEM students with Mentors in STEM jobs via a web app. It’s called The STEM Exchange, take a look: https://thestemexchange.co.uk/
