Education:
I went to high school and took my undergrad in the Philippines, specifically at Bicol Regional Science High School and University of the Philippines for my bachelor’s degree in nutrition. In 2017, I moved to north Wales to pursue MSc Public Health and Health Promotion at Bangor University as a Chevening scholar. After completing my master’s, I got admitted at Glasgow Caledonian University as a Scottish Government Hydro Nation scholar to take my PhD and research about green pharmaceuticals and blue space health interventions.

I am a licenced nutritionist-dietician in the Philippines.

Work History:
I worked as a public health nutritionist for the Philippine government for almost 8 years. When I moved to Wales for my master’s, I worked with Polygeia London and University of Liverpool as a health researcher. I also volunteered for a youth organisation in Poland. Currently, I am a doctoral researcher whilst volunteering for ScienceChatPH and the International Young Food and Nutrition Leaders.

I am a Filipino currently based in Glasgow for my doctoral research. I love turtles and have volunteered in turtle protection organisation back in the Philippines. I also love swimming and surfing but since I cannot do these activities in Scotland, I do a lot walking and hiking when I am not doing my research. I am also a member of the GCU Choir and have co-founded ScienceChatPH, an community that works on effective science communication.

My work practically involves on creating evidence that will help in making healthcare services in Scotland more environmentally friendly. I investigate on how to prescribe environmentally friendly pharmaceuticals and how we can optimise the healing powers of our natural environment.

My Typical Day:
I am a night owl but I am now trying to be an early riser. I usually start my day by creating a “safe circle-shaped space” for myself. Ask me how you can make one for yourself!

Since the start of lockdown in Scotland, I have been doing my work in my flat. This involves reading loads of articles about health, green pharmaceuticals, blue space interventions, and climate change.

What did you want to be after you left school?
Health Policy and Promotion Specialist
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Yes! I had fallen out with my Chemistry teacher in high school after putting me on a shameful spot in front of our class and pressured me to draw the ball-and-stick figure of acetaminophen (C8H9NO2), basically a paracetamol!
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Ed Sheeran
What's your favourite food?
Salmon sushi roll, ramen, and gyoza
