That is a great question! My experiments are quite short so I can do multiple in a day. Quite a bit of my time is spent setting up and resetting after each experiment. I have to check that the pump is working, there are no leaks and that my starting river shape is right. I start with a straight channel every time and then see what changes happen from there. I also record my experiments so I watch the videos back to check I got what I needed.

Every day is so different. Some times I’m in a different part of the world working with other people to answer questions about biodiversity. We might be outside looking at plants and animals or we might be sharing things we know already to help one another answer environmental questions. Some times I am meeting with people in my group so they can explain their work to me and all that they have found out. Some times I am writing or giving talks. It is so varied.

Good question! Being a scientist is such a varied job. I do lots of things. Sometimes I talk to my team about their work, and find out how they are doing. Other times I might be writing out new ideas for research projects (to see if I can win money for them), or writing presentations and reports about our research.

First thing is to make sure that you put away your equipment after cleaning and sterilising. Clean your work bench and prepare it for the next day. Record your experiments. Read what you need to do the next day and prepare the solutions or materials you need to prepare overnight. If you need help, talk to other scientist or research papers online. And, you also deserve to unwind. Have a coffee with your lab group, others and if done, then go home and get enough rest to start your day fresh!
