The Bloop Mystery is a great example of how science works. Scientists discovered an unexplained, unusual noise using microphones in the ocean. Using their knowledge of how fast sound travels in water, and by comparing the readings from different places, they were able to identify that the sound came from a part of antartica, near South America. A team of scientists went out to study the area and managed to record similar sounds caused by an icequake – when a large amount of ice breaks off and starts to form an iceberg.

So, we can’t say for certain what cause it, because no-one was there at the time that the noise was made. But we have found similar noises in the same location, so I think it’s most likely that it was caused by an icequake, and not a new sea monster!
